Description
Here’s a small but mineralogically fascinating specimen: a Greek ruby corundum displaying a vibrant pinkish-red color that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding green pargasite. Upon closer inspection—best done under the microscope—you can also spot a third mineral species with a blue hue: kyanite! Although ruby and kyanite are both known to occur within the amphibolitic host rock of this remote Greek locality, finding them actually in contact is much rarer. So, within just 1.2 cm of specimen, you have the three most characteristic minerals of this locality’s paragenesis! Personally collected in the field in April 2023.
