Description

In a January 2025 article, Wendel Wilson used the phrase “The King of Pseudomorphs” as the subtitle for his discussion of malachite-after-azurite—and indeed, many collectors would agree that these are among the most spectacular pseudomorphs in the mineral world. Tsumeb is one of the classic localities renowned for producing exceptional examples of this transformation, and the specimen offered here is no exception. Two formerly blue azurite crystals are aesthetically attached at an angle, forming a “dancing” composition. Over time, as the geochemical conditions shifted, the original azurite was replaced by green malachite, yet the external form of the azurite was perfectly preserved. As is often seen in such pseudomorphs, the replacement appears to have initiated at several points and then progressed through the crystals, creating the characteristic radiating and banded, silky-lustrous patterns that all of us adore to marvel. A truly gorgeous and classic specimen!
