Description
A specimen of smithsonite from the Lavrio mining district in Greece. This piece consists of a smithsonite encrustation deposited over an apparently euhedral, sharp-edged mineral. Additionally, the specimen appears to record two phases of deposition: the first forming a white crust, followed by a second overlying gray layer. This provides a nice indication of a geochemically evolving environment. Both smithsonite layers are composed of numerous minute spherules exhibiting a beautiful pearly lustre.
