Description

A specimen of grossular, andradite and calcite from Maroneia, Greece. This piece is particularly intriguing from a geochemical perspective, as it brings together two distinct garnet species on the same specimen: greenish-yellow grossular occurring side by side and in direct contact with brown andradite. Grossular and andradite form a continuous solid-solution series, in which aluminum, dominant in grossular, is progressively replaced by ferric iron, which becomes dominant in andradite. The light-blue calcite adds a striking color contrast to the association. The specimen comes from a 2023 discovery that produced this attractive and geochemically fascinating mineral assemblage.
