Description
A specimen of smithsonite from the Lavrio mining district in Greece. This piece features attractive blue-grey botryoidal smithsonite that appears to have formed as a coating over an earlier mineral (fluorite?). The original mineral has since dissolved away, leaving behind a delicate smithsonite cast. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this is a fascinating specimen that invites speculation about the complex sequence of mineral deposition, alteration, and dissolution that produced it.
