Description

Scalenohedral calcite crystals are known to occur in the Lavrio mining district, with some reaching impressive sizes. While these specimens can be striking, calcite is not usually the first mineral that comes to a collector’s mind when Lavrio is mentioned. However, a find made in 2025 may well change that perception, bringing Lavrio calcites closer to recognition as truly outstanding. This specimen comes from that discovery, in which a batch of exceptionally sparkly and lustrous brown calcites was recovered. Their habit is particularly distinctive: the scalenohedrons are composed of multiple smaller terminations, while countless tiny crystals are sprinkled across the larger ones, giving the specimen an overall “cactus-like” appearance. A spectacular specimen from this historic mining area of Greece.
