Description

An exceptional combination specimen from the Lavrio mines in Greece. Measuring nearly 20 cm, it features a carpet of green botryoidal spherules. Analyses show that their composition lies at the midpoint of the conichalcite–austinite series, meaning one spherule may be slightly conichalcite-dominant while an adjacent one may lean toward austinite. Adding to its appeal, transparent calcite crystals form as a delicate overgrowth on the green arsenates. Beyond its visual impact, the specimen is mineralogically significant. The sawn base reveals spots of native copper—rare for Lavrio—alongside patches of tenorite and cuprite, all within a goethite–limonite matrix. Together, these phases represent a complete redox sequence of copper mineralization within a single specimen, making it a true connoisseur’s piece!
