Description
A specimen of andradite and hedenbergite from the island of Serifos in Greece. This exceptional old-timer piece features several beautiful andradite garnets perched like icing atop a cluster of radially developed, prismatic, deep green hedenbergite crystals. Minor quartz is attached in some areas, adding yet another species to the specimen’s paragenesis. The specimen originates from the personal collection of Nikos Albandakis, one of Serifos’ most prominent field collectors, who was especially active during the 1970s and 1980s. In 2019, Mr. Albandakis authored the book “Greece: Searching for Minerals, Fossils and Stones”, in which he documented much of the knowledge accumulated over decades of dedicated fieldwork. The specimen you are currently admiring is illustrated and published in his book on page 65, providing an additional layer of provenance and historical significance.
